POLITICAL LEADERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST

HOMELESSNESS

Urban Strategies, Inc.­ Fannie Barnes Residence First Annual Fannie Bowl Fundraiser and Advocacy Event

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (August , 2013)­ One in every five children in New York City public schools are homeless that’s over 69,545 homeless students. On August 2, 2013, Urban Strategies, Inc. – Fannie Barnes Residence, a 43­ year­ old Brooklyn based nonprofit and social services organization, will be uniting political and community leaders in the fight against homelessness during their First Annual Fannie Bowl Fundraiser and Advocacy Event at 300 New York, Chelsea Piers.

Paul Miller, the director of Fannie Barnes is hoping this event lends a voice to the need for educational and skills training programs for the homeless. He believes, “ Our job as community organizations is not to just give a man a fish but to teach a man how to fish. That’s how to revitalize your community and prevent homelessness.” For more information about the event and to make donations visit www.FannieBowlFundraiser.org. The organization will also be raffling exclusive items including a walk­ on the set of the CBS sitcom “The Good Wife”, and contributions from the New York Jets, the Brooklyn Nets, former heavy weight champion Mike McCallum, and various other supporters. Proceeds from this event will help enhance the organizations’ literacy and youth based programming and support the continued provision of services for homeless and low ­income families.

ABOUT URBAN STRATEGIES, INC. – FANNIE BARNES RESIDENCE

Since 1970 Urban Strategies, Inc. has supported the Brooklyn community, working in the fight against homelessness. To date they own and operate over 600 units of low income housing, 10 store fronts, 3 DHS Homeless and transitional shelters, and a variety of childcare, after school programs, summer programs, and a food pantry in the East New York, Central Brooklyn, Oceanhill­ Brownsville, and Bedford Stuyvesant, neighborhoods. In 1994, Urban Strategies opened Fannie Barnes, their third transitional shelter under NYC Department of Homeless Services. Fannie Barnes has housed and serviced thousands of homeless and low ­income residents in an effort to reduce homelessness and assist the plight of needy families throughout the Brooklyn area.
